Installation/Setup

  1. What are the system requirements for PatentWrangler?
    Windows 95 or better and about 1.43 Megabyte (fits on a floppy) and does not need to be installed.  As patent and applications can get rather large, a high speed internet connection is recommended.
     

  2. How do I install PatentWrangler?
    You don't have to install PatentWrangler!  Just download and run.  Put it on a floppy, cd-rom, or jump drive and take it with you.  Add it to your start menu by simply dragging the downloaded file to your start menu. 
     

  3. Do I still need a tiff viewer?
    The PatentWrangler does not need a tiff viewer.  However, if you wish to view images at the USPTO with your web browser you will still need a tiff viewer.  More information can be found at the USPTO.
     

  4. How do I update to the latest version.
    Click File on the menu, then Update.  You may also press alt-u.  If available, the latest version will be downloaded and you will be prompted to run the latest version when the download is complete.  PatentWrangler will also automatically periodically check for updates to keep you up to date.  Free updates are available for the first year.

Usage

  1. How do I download a patent?
    Simply type the patent number in the textbox and press enter (or click on download).
     

  2. How do I download a patent application?
    Simply type the publication number (11 digits) or the serial number (including the '/') in the textbox and press enter (or click on download).
     

  3. Can I download patents and patent applications at the same time?
    Yes, just type in each patent number, publication number, or serial numbers and press enter (or click on download).
     

  4. Can I download X (pre 1836), design, plant reissue, and additional improvement patents, or defensive publications, or statutory invention registrations (SIR)?
    Yes, just include the entire number, including the preceding characters.  For example plant patents start with 'PP', reissue patents start with 'RE' and design patents start with 'D'.  More information can be found here at the USPTO.
     

  5. Does PatentWrangler create one multi-page PDF or one PDF per page?
    With PatentWrangler you get a single PDF per patent or patent application.  One file, one complete patent or patent application, unlike other solutions which give you one page per file.
     

  6. How do I print a patent or application?
    Select the desired patents and applications, right click and select print.
     

  7. How do I view a patent or application in my favorite pdf viewer?
    Select the desired patents and applications, right click and select open.
     

  8. How much does the PatentWrangler cost?
    Just $29.99 per year.
     

  9. Does PatentWrangler have a per patent or patent application fee?
    No!  No download fees, you pay just $29.99 per year.
     

  10. Can I use the PatentWrangler to download the entire USPTO database?
    It is not recommended to use PatentWrangler to download an excessive amount of patents or patent applications!  PatentWranger uses a public server of the USPTO.  The USPTO has stated that third party applications such as PatentWranger are acceptable.  However, as the USPTO is public server, excessive use (more than 10,000 pages per day) may result in restriction to the USPTO servers.  More information can be found at the USPTO here  and here.
